EASE Secures First International Lender to Expand Equipment-as-a-Service Model in South Africa

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- EASE South Africa has secured its first international lender to expand a revolutionary new model that provides clinics and hospitals with access to high-end medical equipment. EASE installs state-of-the-art PET-CT and MRI scanners, surgical robots, and other high-value machines with healthcare providers across South Africa.

The approach allows hospitals and clinics to pay on a per-scan or per-event basis, aligning their costs with revenue. Standard Bank is the first international lender to fund this innovative model.

The initiative is already making an impact, with installations of a surgical robot in one South African metropolitan hospital and a PET-CT scanner in another densely populated underserved region.

Without the burden of heavy upfront equipment costs, a longstanding barrier for many healthcare centres in accessing the latest technology, capital is freed up for priorities such as increasing hospital beds and nursing staff. A first-of-its-kind for Africa, this initiative is set to change the healthcare landscape for many hospitals and clinics.

“Securing our first international lender serves as a great support to our mission of transforming healthcare delivery in Africa,” said Imraan Soomra, CEO of EASE. “By removing the financial hurdles that limit access to advanced medical technology, our model gives hospitals and clinics the flexibility to expand care, hire more clinicians, and grow their infrastructure to better serve patients.”

By linking equipment costs with revenues and offering an off-balance-sheet equipment solution, EASE’s approach helps healthcare providers at once address both immediate and long-term challenges in delivering medical care. With a robust pipeline, EASE is on track to revolutionise healthcare access in South Africa. Its vision extends beyond this initial rollout, with plans to expand into additional sectors and markets.

EASE’s equipment-as-a-service model has been proven with three installations in the past year. Commissioning of a PET-CT scanner at the Precision Nuclear Oncology and Theranostics facility (PNOAT) in Rustenburg, South Africa, earlier this year follows the deployment of a Da Vinci surgical robot in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, and an advanced MRI diagnostic imaging system in Akwatia, Ghana.

"Equipment-as-a-service models that avoid capital expenditure and align costs with revenue generation are increasingly important in the healthcare sector," said Dr. Phumudzo Nemutaduni, a trailblazing nuclear physician who worked with EASE to install a PET-CT scanner at the PNOAT facility through her company, the Nuclear Med Group, a leading provider of nuclear medicine services across South and Southern Africa. "By enabling hospitals and clinics to access critical medical equipment without large upfront costs, such solutions can support sustainable growth and infrastructure expansion, improving healthcare accessibility in the long term.”

About EASE

Equipment-as-a-Service (EASE®) is a pay-per-use program that provides businesses and organisations with cost-effective access to state-of-the-art healthcare equipment – and maintenance, training and support – with terms that match their circumstances and business needs.
Phase III trial demonstrated Jardiance is the first SGLT2 inhibitor to show statistically significant reduction in blood sugar levels in chi

INGELHEIM, Germany & INDIANAPOLIS - Wednesday, 07. December 2022
Jardiance® (empagliflozin) is the first SGLT2 inhibitor to demonstrate a statistically significant reduction in the primary outcome of HbA1c (a marker of average blood sugar) in participants aged 10-17 living with type 2 diabetes compared to placebo
Safety data in this vulnerable population was similar to that in adults with type 2 diabetes, confirming the well-established safety profile of empagliflozin
(BUSINESS WIRE)--The DINAMO Phase III clinical trial met its primary endpoint by demonstrating a statistically significant reduction in HbA1c (a marker of average blood sugar) with empagliflozin compared with placebo for children and adolescents aged 10-17 years living with type 2 diabetes.1 When empagliflozin was added to other baseline treatments (diet, exercise, metformin and/or insulin) HbA1c was reduced by 0.84% compared with placebo at week 26 (95% CI –1.50 to –0.19; P=0.012)...

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20221207005405/en/

The DINAMO (DIabetes study of liNAgliptin and eMpagliflozin in children and adOlescents) trial included youth aged 10-17 years with type 2 diabetes and HbA1c ≥6.5% and ≤10.5%. Participants were randomly assigned treatment with empagliflozin (10 or 25 mg) (n=52), linagliptin (5 mg) (n=53) or placebo (n=53) once daily. All participants were treated with diet and exercise plus, when appropriate, metformin and/or insulin.1

The overall safety data was generally consistent with previous findings in adults with type 2 diabetes, confirming the well-established safety profile of both Jardiance® (empagliflozin) and Trajenta® (linagliptin).1

“Across the lifespan, we know that people living with type 2 diabetes have a high risk for many diabetes complications, so it’s important to recognize and treat diabetes early in its course,” said Lori Laffel, M.D., Principal Investigator of the DINAMO study and Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult Section at the Joslin Diabetes Center and Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “Today’s results from the DINAMO global clinical trial demonstrated that the SGLT2 inhibitor empagliflozin compared with placebo significantly improved overall blood sugar control in children and adolescents with type 2 diabetes. These findings are particularly important given the need for more therapeutic options, especially oral agents, to manage type 2 diabetes in young people as, to date, metformin is the only globally available oral treatment for youth.”

A secondary endpoint from the trial showed that at week 26, empagliflozin reduced fasting plasma glucose (–35.2 mg/dL; P=0.0035).1

“With more than 41,000 new cases worldwide annually, type 2 diabetes in today’s young people is a global public health issue, especially in light of rise of risk factors such as obesity,” said Lykke Hinsch Gylvin, M.D., Chief Medical Officer at Boehringer Ingelheim. “The clinically meaningful benefit and consistent safety profile demonstrated with empagliflozin in the DINAMO trial is an encouraging outcome for the vulnerable population of children and adolescents.”

“The rise in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in the pediatric population highlights a clear unmet need,” said Jeff Emmick, M.D., Ph.D., Vice President, Product Development, Eli Lilly & Company. “Having overcome the challenges in recruitment and design that pediatric trials tend to face, the outcomes of DINAMO represent another positive step forward in Boehringer Ingelheim and Lilly’s commitment to improve the lives of people living with cardio-renal and metabolic conditions such as type 2 diabetes.”

Reduction in HbA1c in participants treated with linagliptin was not statistically significant when compared with placebo. A numerical reduction of 0.34% (P=0.2935) was observed.1

The findings have been submitted for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

“That feeling that I had that day, that happiness I couldn’t even imagine that could exist. It’s something that was coming out of my body. My heart was exploding."

Tamberi really showed what the Olympic spirit is about when sharing first place. For him it felt just natural. “If both can go back with the happiness? With the proudness of what they have done. It’s much better. We didn’t even think one moment that it would have been different the end, so I will never regret that decision. We will remember it forever and I’m sure we will not be the only two people remembering it.”

The idea for PUMA’s “Only See Great” campaign was inspired by cultural icon, entrepreneur and philanthropist Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter who first said: “I only see great. I don’t see good. I don’t see compromise. We should always strive to make something great, something that will last.”

Philip Morris International (PMI) is a leading international tobacco company working to deliver a smoke-free future and evolving its portfolio for the long term to include products outside of the tobacco and nicotine sector. The company’s current product portfolio primarily consists of cigarettes and smoke-free products, including heat-not-burn, vapor and oral nicotine products, which are sold in markets outside the U.S. Since 2008, PMI has invested more than USD 9 billion to develop, scientifically substantiate and commercialize innovative smoke-free products for adults who would otherwise continue to smoke, with the goal of completely ending the sale of cigarettes. This includes the building of world-class scientific assessment capabilities, notably in the areas of pre-clinical systems toxicology, clinical and behavioral research, as well as post-market studies. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the marketing of versions of PMI’s IQOS Platform 1 devices and consumables as Modified Risk Tobacco Products (MRTPs), finding that exposure modification orders for these products are appropriate to promote the public health. As of March 31, 2022, PMI's smoke-free products are available for sale in 71 markets, and PMI estimates that approximately 12.7 million adults around the world excluding Russia and Ukraine, have already switched to IQOS and stopped smoking. With a strong foundation and significant expertise in life sciences, in February 2021 PMI announced its ambition to expand into wellness and healthcare areas and deliver innovative products and solutions that aim to address unmet consumer and patient needs.
The OPTRACT Method: Efficient Human Donor Cornea Transportation Feat & Futuristic Cell Repository in Zero-gravity for Space-age, Anti-aging

Human buccal and cartilage tissue logistics, add value to regenerative medicine
TOKYO-Thursday 3 March 2022 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- A much efficient human cadaver donor-corneal transportation method, developed by Japanese scientists, may increase the availability of donated eyes to millions of patients with corneal blindness, waiting for corneal transplantation restoring vision. The OPTRACT method, better preserving human buccal tissue and cartilage during transport between hospitals and laboratories, reverses cellular aging, beside being granted a Japanese patent for functional enhancement of immune cells under micro-gravity. These accomplishments harbinger a futuristic strategy of evaluating the implications of inter-stellar environments on human cells aboard a space station without gravity, which if defies aging related damages, may yield solutions to frailty of aging, researchers opine.

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- It has been another successful year for PQE Group, a consulting firm in the LifeScience industry based in Florence (Italy) with 27 offices worldwide. Recently named "Best Managed Company" by Deloitte, the Group closed in 2021 with a turnover of +18% compared to the previous year.

PQE Group, founded and administered by Gilda D'Incerti, reached 1100 employees worldwide in 2021 as a result of the recruitment of more than 600 people, split between recent graduates (mainly in Italy) and senior experts. This trend is expected to continue in 2022, with a further increase reaching 1900 employees by December. 2022 will be the year of focusing on the global locations, especially in the United States and Mexico, where a 250% personnel increase is expected. The development plan also includes the opening of new offices in the United States and Southeast Asia.

In the organizational framework, the Partnership League was established by the Board of Directors: PQE employees who wish to become partners can follow a planned career roadmap. This five-level pyramid structure is divided between equity partners and associates, with several benefits associated with it. An ambitious plan that already announced the appointment of 120 talented young managers - 40% of whom are women - as Associates at the beginning of 2022; selected not only for their professional skills but also for their proactive attitude towards the company. A recognition that will allow them, in the following years, to have increasingly crucial and strategic roles within the company and to grow as Equity Partners in one of the Group's branches.

PQE Group, a leader in the Lifesciences services business since 1998, will formally compete with the world's leading consulting companies in 2022, establishing itself as one of the top five global players focusing in the pharmaceutical sector. "A great honor for a private family company - Made in Italy - with an international dimension," said Stefano Carganico, Vice President Sales & Head of Subsidiaries. "The next steps of the multinational are to move on to potential acquisitions and joint ventures with local companies in all corners of the globe."
