The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police recently organized a traffic awareness lecture at the Tourism Development & Investment Company (TDIC) that benefited as many as 50 drivers. The lecture is part of a series of programs targeting truck drivers of both the public and private sectors, in order to stress the importance of observing traffic laws; adhering to the designated speed limits on internal and external roads; abstaining from entering the city of Abu Dhabi during peak hours and during foggy weather conditions.
Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, Abu Dhabi Police, said: “The lecture included screening of realistic and educational films tackling the most important causes of truck accidents notably; sudden swerving; failure to leave sufficient safe distance between vehicles; excessive speeding; entering a main road without checking if it is clear, or exploding tires; violating lane discipline; neglect and lack of attention; and accidents that occur as a result of exceeding the imposed load capacity”.
Moreover, Lt. Colonel Al Ameri urged truck drivers to abide by the preventive measures undertaken by the directorate to ensure truck drivers’ safety during foggy conditions or low horizontal visibility, by not allowing trucks to enter Abu Dhabi city during peak hours and during weather changes and banning them from using the external roads in cases of low visibility due to fog or bad weather.
Furthermore, Lt. Colonel Al Ameri emphasized the need for drivers to observe the legal speed limits that have been set on highways to 80 km/h. He also called upon drivers to ensure the safety of their vehicles’ tires, comply with cargo height restrictions, which must not exceed 60cm, so as to ensure the vehicle’s balance as well as the safety of the driver and passengers during the trip on the road. He noted that exceeding the imposed load capacity is a traffic offence that entails up to one week impounding of the vehicle, plus an AED 200 fine, and three black points.
