Abu Dhabi Police to Distribute 50 Thousand Awareness Brochures during GCC Traffic Week

Extensive Awareness via Social Media

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, March 3rd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police, represented by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, announced an extensive traffic-related awareness drive via the various media outlets and social networking sites in conjunction with the GCC Traffic Week, which runs from 8 to 19 March 2015. The week-long awareness program will be carried out in collaboration with the Security Media Department, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

In his statement, Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of the Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, said: “As a part of the traffic awareness programs, some 50 thousand awareness brochures will be printed and distributed to the public. The brochures will include guidance and advice aimed at enhancing traffic culture; improving road users’ behavior; and implementing traffic laws and safety standards. They will also acquaint the public with the importance of wearing seat belts and helmets; reducing speed; the proper methods of crossing the roads safely, the safe transport of students; and will shed the light on the variety of other risks that cause traffic accidents.”

According to Colonel Al Ameri, the awareness messages target all segments of society, because traffic safety is a shared societal and personal responsibility. He said: “The ‘GCC Traffic Week’ is held this year under the slogan ‘Your choices determine your destiny’, which emphasizes the importance for each individual to take responsibility to reduce traffic accidents. This is achieved by adopting a proper driving behavior and taking the right decisions, such as observing traffic laws, respecting the legal speed limits, leaving sufficient safe distance between vehicles, paying attention to the road, wearing the seat belt, and making sure not to use mobile phones while driving.”

Colonel Al Ameri noted that the traffic awareness drive, which will be carried out in conjunction with the GCC Traffic Week activities, will be implemented across the various social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter; traffic-related programs will also be hosted via radio and live broadcast studios.  The Friday Khutbahs will also tackle the Traffic Week topic and activities; and awareness messages will be emailed to all government entities.

In conclusion, Colonel Al Ameri said: “The GCC Traffic Week is an extensive traffic-oriented media campaign. The main objective of this campaign is to continuously and relentlessly ensure that citizens and residents increase their understanding of the rules and etiquette of traffic, and to remind them of the importance of adhering to the traffic laws.” He also called upon everyone to activate social partnership, with the aim of achieving the directorate’s vision of a safe society and zero fatalities.

For his part, Captain Hamdan Hassan bin Thiban, Information Officer at the Public Relations Section, the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, noted that the awareness programs include three major traffic-related messages that will be broadcasted via several radio stations, about the importance of wearing seat belts, the risks of exceeding legal speeds and using mobile phones while driving. Another awareness message will be prepared and delivered by the ‘Million’s Poet’ Saif Salem Al Mansouri; and traffic awareness short movies prepared by the Security Media Department will be broadcasted by the various TV stations.

Adding further, Captain Bin Thiban said: “The traffic awareness campaign will also include interactive programs, such as a five-day traffic related radio competition for members of the public. The competition aims at acquainting all segments of society of the unwavering efforts to provide traffic safety, and to reduce traffic accidents and their resulting deaths and serious injuries. Cash prizes will be awarded to winners.”

In conclusion, Captain Hamdan bin Thiban said that the official inauguration ceremony of the GCC Traffic Week in Abu Dhabi will take place on Sunday, March 8 at Yas Mall, and will include a set of awareness-oriented activities, lectures and extensive programs. “The events’ program in Abu Dhabi will include setting up stands across several major malls; workshops, lectures, seminars, educational contests, and free painting studio. It will also feature videos that are designed to improve road users’ driving behavior, using innovative simulation means; which highlight the psychological and physical impacts of traffic accidents,” he added.
