The Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Directorate General of Central Operations at the Abu Dhabi Police have recently organized an open-community dialogue for drivers who have broken the traffic laws, or who have violated the vehicle decoration regulations for the National day and other occasions. The event, which was held in the Directorate’s auditorium, took place in order to avoid the recurrence of the violator’s misconduct, which deviates from the slogan of the celebrations: “Let's Celebrate the Spirit of the Union without Violations”. The violations included being too noisy, causing disturbances, or driving in a way that endanger the public.
Brigadier Khamis Ishaq Mohammed, Director of the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate, said: “One of the priorities of the Abu Dhabi Police’s traffic safety strategy is to provide traffic-related safety and security; and to prevent young people from being involved in accidents, and the resulting deaths and injuries. The strategy aims to improve the behavior of young drivers through organizing programs that open the dialogue of communication with them.” He continued by saying that such programs contribute towards achieving sustainable traffic safety practices that preserve human life, “which is the most important type of wealth – and the cornerstone of development.”
During the panel discussion, Brigadier Khamis Ishaq explained that the awareness messages discussed with the young offenders aim to illustrate the danger of the violations they had committed and urge them to abide by the traffic law. The discussions emphasized the importance of complying with the traffic law during their participation in national and sporting events, holidays and weddings; as these occasions should never serve as a pretext for violating the law.
He stressed that the Directorate has strengthened its community outreach with young people via the Internet and educational institutions, and by using all interactive means. This comes in a bid to reduce losing human capital and to protect people from traffic accidents and the resulting deaths, injuries, and negative social effects.
Using some examples of the dangerous offenses that had been committed by some of the young drivers during the National Day, Brigadier Khamis Ishaq highlighted violations that included: reckless driving, driving without a license, driving on a public road without a license plate, driving an uninsured vehicle on the highway, driving a noisy vehicle, driving a vehicle even though the driver’s license has been revoked, and performing dangerous stunts or trying to show-off. He additionally warned drivers who had been detained from repeating their offenses in order to avoid aggravating sanctions as required by law.
During the meeting, Brigadier Khamis Ishaq listened to the viewpoints of the young drivers. He noted that making additions to vehicles, including changing engine specifications and making amendments in order to increase their speeds and amplify their sound, constitutes a very dangerous offense. He said that this increases the risk of the vehicle catching fire, especially when bumping against a blunt object, which could cause an explosion or a short circuit with fuel leakage. Such dangerous risks are the result of altering a vehicle without considering the manufacturing specifications of the vehicle.
The Director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at Abu Dhabi Police called upon the young drivers to review their behavior and not to commit violations that lead to traffic accidents. “Traffic safety is both a duty and a responsibility that is a shared responsibility by everyone – with no exceptions. Therefore, it is necessary to combine the efforts of all segments of society to be responsible, and to show responsibility towards others by committing to the traffic law,” he said.
He also appealed to the parents and families of these young drivers to strengthen their efforts and to warn their children about the dangers of reckless driving, performing stunts and drifting. “The Traffic and Patrols Directorate is tightening its traffic control through traffic patrols and traffic investigations to address the violations that occur on the road,” he said.
