Dubai Internet City Heads to the USA to Promote Entrepreneurship and Innovation

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, October 8th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Majed Al Suwaidi, Managing Director of Dubai Internet City (DIC) and Dubai Outsource Zone (DOZ), is part of a trade delegation from the UAE who recently visited the United States to discuss innovation with business leaders in Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle and California. The delegation seeks to develop closer synergies between the USA and UAE in business, as well as innovation and entrepreneurship.

During his trip, Majed participated in two panel sessions hosted by the U.S. - UAE Business Council, alongside esteemed panellists H.E. Sheikha Bodour Al Qassimi, Chairperson, Sharjah Investment & Development Authority, Saed Al Awadi, CEO, Dubai Exports, Yousif Al Mutawa, CIO, Dubai Ports World, and Dr. Abeed Alfeefi, Director of Foreign Trade & Export, Abu Dhabi Economic Development.  The panel was moderated by Danny Sebright, President, U.S. – UAE Business Council, a leading advocate for building commercial relationships and expanding business opportunities between the two countries.

The panel discussion provided a platform to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the UAE, and highlighted the important role TECOM Investments has played in developing Dubai’s knowledge economy as well as the numerous opportunities the organisation offers to business partners situated across its free zone business parks. During the session, Majed spoke about the growth of entrepreneurship and the start-up sector in the UAE as well as the ways in which innovation hubs, such as the DIC initiative in5, have played in driving this growth.

Majed Al Suwaidi said:

“The UAE and US share the vision that innovation and entrepreneurship are the engines of economic growth and a key component of the drive to diversify the economy to secure a prosperous future. Entrepreneurship in the UAE is thriving, and, together with the UAE government, Dubai Internet City is working towards facilitating synergies that foster innovation, growth and development.

“During the trip, we have collaborated with leaders in the fields of innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as in the areas of key economic, trade and business developments. The US is an excellent example of the importance of entrepreneurship and innovation in driving business and thought leadership; I was fascinated to visit Silicon Valley where I was able to share ideas about ways in which we can further drive entrepreneurship in the UAE.”

Dubai Internet City and Dubai Outsource Zone, members of TECOM Investments, are now home to over 1400 business partners, including 60% of the Fortune 500 companies operating in the Software, Hardware, Internet Services and Information Technology Companies categories, such as Microsoft, Oracle, DELL and Facebook, as well as leading global multinationals, local SMEs and start-ups. In line with HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s vision to drive entrepreneurship and the technology industry, Dubai Internet City has championed the development of tech start-ups, launching in5 in May 2013 under the patronage of HH Sheikh Majid bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The in5 innovation hub provides infrastructure, support and a dynamic working environment for ICT, mobile and digital start-ups, and currently plays host to 33 tech start-ups and entrepreneurs.
