Emirates Hospital Advances Breast Cancer Care with New Sentimag® Technology

Dubai, United Arab Emirates -Sunday, December 10th 2017 [ AETOS Wire ]

Emirates Hospital, a subsidiary of Emirates Healthcare and located in Dubai, has become the first healthcare facility in the UAE to acquire Sentimag®, an innovative medical device that greatly improves a clinician’s ability to precisely diagnose breast cancer. It also helps the clinician to make an informed decision regarding a patient’s post-operative care. As surgeons want to remove as little tissue as possible during surgery, Sentimag® will allow them to pinpoint the spread of cancer as accurately as possible.

Most treatments for early breast cancer involve a sentinel lymph node biopsy. A sentinel lymph node is defined as the first lymph node to which cancer cells are most likely to spread from the primary tumour. In breast cancer, the sentinel lymph nodes are located in the armpit area. The traditional method of carrying out the biopsy on the patient uses radioisotopes. Incorporating Sentimag® in its breast care pathway, Emirates Hospital now offers an effective clinical solution that does not use radioisotopes so that radiation is avoided. This is clearly better for patients.

Sentimag® uses safe magnetic fields to help surgeons locate the important sentinel lymph nodes. This ultrasensitive methodology avoids unnecessary removal of other lymph nodes and minimises health complications for the patient.

Pramod Balakrishnan, CEO of Emirates Healthcare, commented, “It is an incredible honour for Emirates Hospital to be the first hospital in the UAE to purchase Sentimag®. Emirates Healthcare’s commitment to innovation has placed us at the forefront of the latest opportunities for advancement in the healthcare sector. All our hospitals and clinics practice patient-centred delivery of quality care and this guiding principle is why we invest in the latest state-of-the-art technologies”.

“Sysmex is proud to facilitate the vision of Emirates Hospital to be the most advanced healthcare facility in the region. Sentimag® has already been used to treat more than 25,000 breast cancer patients across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. We look forward to continuing our work with Emirates Healthcare by showcasing advances in medical equipment and technology that benefit the patient”, said Saad Kayali, Managing Director of Sysmex Middle East, the exclusive distributor of Sentimag® and a leading provider of automated diagnostic testing equipment and middleware information systems technology.

Emirates Hospital strives to find new dynamic and innovative ways to improve the quality of care for its patients as well as regularly reviewing patient safety measures. Dr Sama Zibdeh, breast surgeon at Emirates Hospital’s Breast Care Clinic explained, “An important advantage of Sentimag® is that, unlike the conventional methods used for detecting whether cancer has spread to the lymph nodes, this does not require nuclear medicine to administer the process. The technology uses magnetic fields and tiny magnetic particles to evaluate the progression of breast cancer and this simplifies cancer diagnosis without the patient being exposed to radiation.”

Sentimag® represents part of Emirates Hospital’s latest and progressive diagnostic medical tools available to its patients. The Breast Care Clinic’s highly professional breast surgeons are committed to delivering excellent and advanced care that is informed by the latest research and clinical developments to combat cancer and improve patient outcomes.
