GCC National Dead and 3 Asians Injured in 7 Accidents Due to Rain in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, January 19th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

On Monday, a young GCC national has died in Al Ain and three persons of Asian nationality have suffered mild injuries from seven separate traffic accidents in Abu Dhabi due to the rain.

According to Lt. Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, Chief of Public Relations Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate of Abu Dhabi Police, responders arrived within minutes of receiving the reports and transferred the injured to hospitals. All responses to the accidents were properly executed and the roads were cleared of the damaged vehicles.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accidents were caused by driving at speeds that are not suitable for the driving conditions in rainy weather, not leaving sufficient space between cars, and not paying attention to the road,” Lt. Colonel Al Ameri said.

Lt. Colonel Al Ameri called upon the motorists to be cautious while driving and to be mindful of weather changes when driving on the roads or inside tunnels. He also warned against using the hazard lights, which should only be used if the vehicles have come to a complete stop, and against using the high-beams, as drivers should only be using the low-light bulbs in the vehicle while driving in the rain.

Lt. Colonel Al Ameri urged the drivers to check the integrity of their vehicle’s windshield wipers before driving, and warned them against parking or stopping under trees, near billboards, or around construction sites during strong winds.

“Drivers who have had a minor car accident or mechanical breakdown while driving in the rain should remove their vehicles from the road and park the vehicle at the nearest and safest location. By doing so, drivers will not only be able to ensure their own safety, but they will avoid traffic fines by not inhibiting the flow of traffic,” he said.
