Mock Fire Drill at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, October 16th 2014 [ME NewsWire]
The Strategy and Performance Development Department at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters carried out a successful mock drill to extinguish a ‘fire’ that broke out at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ building. Top officers at the Department took part in the drill, which was conducted in collaboration with the General Directorate of Civil Defense and the Emergency and Public Safety Department; during which rescue teams evacuated staff members from the building and managed to extinguish the fire in record time.
As per the scenario, the Abu Dhabi Police’s Operations Room received a tip-off at 8:00 a.m. on the outbreak of the ‘fire’.  As soon as the fire alarm sounded, safety officials evacuated the building and escorted employees and workers to the muster points pending the arrival of Civil Defense and rescue teams.
The evacuation plan was conducted according to the scenario after notifying the relevant police authorities, Civil Defense and backup entities, which dealt professionally and efficiently with the fire drill. Colonel Faisal Sultan Al Shuaibi, Director of Strategy and Performance Development at Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, indicated that the drill was carried out in pursuance of the Environment, Health and Safety Policy at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ; and complements the activities and services provided by Abu Dhabi Police.
He also added that the Abu Dhabi Police implements several procedures and programs aimed at maintaining the environment, preserving natural resources and protecting staff members. He stressed the police leadership’s commitment to maintain close partnership between governmental and private sectors, as well as following up on the development and implementation of relevant projects.
As per the scenario, the Abu Dhabi Police’s Operations Room received a tip-off on the outbreak of the ‘fire’ at 8:00 am.  The rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene and arrived within 5 minutes. Patrols from the Abu Dhabi Ambulance Section at the Traffic and Patrols Directorate were also dispatched to participate in the drill as First Responders.
“According to the scenario, the evacuation process was carried out and 4 injured people were rescued from inside the directorate’s main building, while two other persons fainted at the muster point due to smoke inhalation; the Ambulance teams provided all of them with the necessary medical care. Firefighting teams managed to contain and extinguish the fire, and the drill concluded at 8:40 am, where all staff members returned to their offices,” added Colonel Al Shuaibi.
It is worth mentioning that the General Directorate of Civil Defense, Abu Dhabi is keen to organize regular mock drills and evacuation operations through field visits to facilities wishing to carry out such drills to ensure their compliance with the requirements of health and occupational safety systems. Teams of safety officials would be then formed at each facility to provide assistance during the evacuation processes and are provided with the necessary lectures.
These measures are designed to ensure the success of evacuation drills and provide real-time assessment of the experience. This would contribute to enhancing the Ministry of Interior’s strategic objectives aimed at protecting lives and property, as well as increasing awareness in society.
