MoI Child Protection Centre Takes Part in GCC Traffic Week

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, March 3rd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Ministry of Interior Child Protection Centre is taking part in the activities of the 31st Unified GCC Traffic Week held under the slogan “Your Choice Determines Your Destiny”. This event aims to foster a social culture that achieves the highest levels of traffic awareness for all community members, including both adults and children. The event is also to remind all individuals regarding the importance of abiding by the rules of traffic.

Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and Chairman of the Higher Committee for Child Protection at the Ministry of Interior, asserted that the MoI continuously exerts significant efforts for protecting children and in maintaining their safety by enhancing public awareness regarding safety procedures. He highlighted the importance of instilling the culture of traffic safety at a young age and said: “Traffic Week involves aspects related to both security and safety, and by using modern and creative tools and methods, we aim to capture the interest of our community members - most particularly the children. The events are to serve as a reminder for parents regarding the best methods for protecting their children, which will ultimately reflect positively upon the leading achievements and unique results that embody the government’s strategy to establish the UAE as one of the safest and most secure countries for children.” He also noted that the Ministry, represented by the Child Protection Centre, has adopted strategic methods outlined within the 14 dimensions of child protection and the general objectives of the Centre to protect children on roads and in vehicles.

For his part, Major Dr. Mohammed Khalifa Al Ali, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Child Protection Centre, said: “The Child Protection Centre strives to raise the level of our children’s traffic awareness by finding age-appropriate, interesting, and attractive methods to instill positive etiquette and traffic behaviors from a young age. The aim is to link these positive behaviors to traffic safety and to introduce children to the rules of the road, which include: the proper ways to enter and exit vehicles; cross streets at the designated crosswalks; how to sit properly in buses or vehicles; and wearing a seatbelt.” Major Dr. Al Ali also noted the importance the Centre places on educating children regarding their personal safety while crossing the street or playing in public spaces and introduces them to the methods of traffic light signals for pedestrians and motorists.

He said that the Ministry of Interior Child Protection Centre utilizes social media to spread awareness and educational messages on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter @SafeChildUAE.

Major Dr. Al Ali encouraged parents to be involved and participate in the activities of the 31st Unified GCC Traffic Week across the UAE and said: “Learn more about the ways to keep yourself, your family and your loved ones safe on the road and take advantage of the workshops, lectures, seminars, and educational competitions of the event.”
