Otolaryngology Division Organizes Rhinology & Otology Congress

Hussain Abdul Rahman: Sinus diseases in UAE accounts for 15%, followed by apnea diseases with 10%

The Otolaryngology Division, Emirates Medical Association, in cooperation with the Ministry of Health (MOH) and the Dubai Health Authority (DHA), will organize training workshops on the 10th of January at Mohammed Bin Rashid Academic Medical Center (MBR-AMC) at Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC). The workshops will involve using surgical microscope on human heads. The event will include a workshop on microsurgery targeting the otitis media (the middle ear) in addition to targeting the temporal bone that contains both the otitis media and the auris interna (the inner ear). An elite group of international physicians will supervise the workshops, channeling their hands-on experiences in handling such operations for specialists within UAE and the region.

Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman, MOH Assistant Undersecretary for Health Centers and Clinics and President of ORL, Head & Neck Society, Emirates Medical Association, said: “On the 13th of January, the Otolaryngology Division will organize a workshop on dizziness at the InterContinental Hotel Dubai - Festival City, hosting international specialist physicians to discuss inner ear-related dizziness. Another workshop will present the latest updated research regarding Otolaryngology, and for the first time, will allow specialist researchers to receive training on how to conduct medical research.”

“These workshops precede the 5th Emirates Rhinology & Otology Congress, which will be held in Dubai on 14-16 January, under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Minister of Finance, and President of Dubai Health Authority. The Congress will run in line with the 9th International Pan ARABFOS Conference, 4th Arab & GCC Otology & Audiology Conference, and the 2nd Advanced Arab Academy of Audio-vestibular Conference. An anticipated 1200 physicians, 40 of whom are international, will attend the event. A post-congress workshop on snoring and apnea will be held on the 17th of January,” Dr. Abdul Rahman added.

Dr. Abdul Rahman continued: “In terms of prevalence, the most common Rhinology and Otology diseases are sinus diseases with 15 percent, followed by nose allergy and apnea problems with 10 percent, and head and neck cancer tumors with 3 percent.” He urged all concerned entities and individuals to raise awareness regarding preventive measures. “Primarily, avoid exposure to dust, avoid smoking, and clean air-ducts and air-conditioning thoroughly and regularly- where fungi tend to grow,” he said. Dr. Abdul Rahman added: “the Congress will tap into a variety of topics. Participating physicians will present a comprehensive approach on nasal and sinus diseases, ear diseases and cochlear implant operations in children who suffer from severe hearing loss. The topics will also cover hearing and disequilibrium disorders, cancerous tumors in mouth, larynx, head, and neck, in addition to functional and cosmetic nose surgery.” Moreover, Dr. Abdul Rahman said: “The Congress will be attended by the General Secretary of The International Federation of ORL Societies (IFOS) and the President of the European Academy of Otorhinolaryngology, along with a number of selected physicians, as well as Arab and foreign specialists. On the sidelines of the Congress, a medical exhibition will be held, hosting 40 local and global companies exhibiting the latest medical devices and equipment in Otorhinolaryngology diseases that are common in the Arab region.”
