The council, which was moderated by media figure Issa Al Mail, from Abu Dhabi Media, is part of the awareness-raising councils organized by the Respect Culture Bureau in cooperation with the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. The participants in Al Bateen Council called for enhancing the efforts of all concerned organizations in the country to prepare awareness programs to educate the youths about the dangers of drugs, and show them their negative impact on the individual and the society. They also praised the efforts exerted by the MoI in the fight against drugs that are detrimental to youth, who are the pillars of every society’s future. They also indicated that drug addiction is a dark world, with harmful psychological and health consequences, which corrode the structure of society and destabilize the family.
Colonel Eid Mohammed bin Thani explained the UAE, like other countries in the region, is vulnerable to such illegal activities that seek to gain financial profit, without taking into consideration its impact on the individual’s mental health. He also stressed the keenness and readiness of anti-drug agencies in the country to keeping the UAE safe and protecting citizens against any criminal activities related to drug dealing, smuggling or abuse, due to the negative health, economic, or societal impacts of the “drug scourge” on society and individuals.
For his part, Colonel Sultan Suwayeh Al Darmaki indicated that the main goals of drug dealers are to gain money through illegal ways, and to lure the youths and teenagers into addiction, as they are the pillars of any nation’s strength. He called upon the public to cooperate positively during the awareness-raising campaigns and control efforts by reporting any incident that may undermine security and tranquility of society, by calling the Aman service number on 8002626. He also highlighted the need to raise awareness of families to help their children choose good companionship, stay away from bad companions, and acquaint them with the useful means to fill their leisure time, and prevent them from falling prey to the drug affliction.
The Council addressed the need to increase awareness about the serious damages of drug abuse of various types. Major Mohammed Al Mansouri, Awareness Branch Manager at the Anti-narcotics Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Abu Dhabi Police, noted that that drug cultivation, production and peddling are penalized by laws and regulations in different countries around the world, especially in the United Arab Emirates. He highlighted the efforts exerted to educate the youth and various categories of society and raise their awareness about the damages caused by this nefarious scourge, in addition to the legal and police means of deterrence used to prevent drug peddling and trafficking in society. He pointed out that the effects of drug abuse are numerous, some of which might affect the health of an individual in addition to the economic consequences that affect the person, the family, and the society as a whole.
For their part, officials and rehabilitation experts from the National Rehabilitation Center said that the most efficient methods of prevention against addiction are monitoring children and keeping dialogue with them to discuss issues of concern to them; in addition to learning their views on the future and raising their awareness about the various negative phenomena that may undermine their future. In conclusion, they pointed out that providing treatment for drug addicts requires cooperation between the family and the concerned parties.
