Emirates Falconers’ Club Organises workshop on the Illegal Trafficking of Raptors

 

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates -Monday, April 24th 2017 [ ME NewsWire ]

Experts and researchers from local and international bodies will attend a workshop on the Illegal Trafficking of Raptors in the Middle East and North Africa in the UAE capital.

Organized by the Emirates Falconers’ Club in collaboration with the International Association for Falconry and Conservation of Birds of Prey, the workshop under the title “Illegal Trafficking of Raptors in the Middle East and North Africa, Current Situation and Future Solutions” will take place on Tuesday April 25, at the Centro Rotana Capital Centre, in Abu Dhabi.

The workshop aims to support international efforts in addressing the challenges faced by falconers and those keen in protecting the environment and preserving heritage and nature.

The workshop will discuss two key areas of trafficking in birds that will highlight the process of controlling falconry and dealing with it in light of the threats posed by illegal traffickers.

The experts and professionals from across the Middle East and North Africa will also discuss the scientific review of illegal bird killing, tackling illegal trapping of raptors and strategic plans on the ways of preserving wildlife in the region and future solutions to ensure their sustainability.

The Emirates Falconers’ Club has over the recent years been able to protect birds in addition to promoting and supporting of sustainable hunting methods. The club has also integrated with international efforts to achieve common goals in raising awareness of birds hunting, protection and reduce of threat risks.

The workshop is in line with the recommendations of the symposium "Moving forward with the UNESCO registration to preserve the old norms

and also find new solutions to the problems affecting wildlife," which recommended limiting the hunting of falcons and preventing their illegal trade, held at the conclusion of ADIHEX, the International Exhibition of Hunting and Equestrian 2016.

The workshop, organized by Emirates Falconers Club, is also in line with the UAE 2021 Vision, which sets several indicators to ensure the sustainable development of the environment, in addition to the plans and strategies set by the UAE government to achieve that vision and meet the needs of the environment.

The workshop establishes the concept of the UAE legislators, under the Federal Law No. 11 of 2002, which affirms that strict measures be taken on people mistreating and abusing animal rights including illegal trade so as to preserve and protect them.

And in support of the International Convention on the Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES),  the UAE in 1990 established a Federal Decree No. 86 of 1989 and issued pursuant to Federal Law No. 11 of 2002, with the aim of raising environmental balance indicators through the creation of effective and integrated global trading systems for wildlife between countries and the judiciary of illegal trade, in addition to the development of legislation and implementation of this field and the management of resources and scientific research.
