ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, January 16th 2016 [ME NewsWire]

Participants in the Ministry of Interior’s Council hosted by UAE national Suhail Shaheen Al Marar at his residence in Khalifa City in Abu Dhabi stressed the need to reinforce legal culture on cyber crime amongst all segments of society and age groups. This can be achieved via the different media platforms and social networking sites, with a view to educate community members, particularly young people, who are the largest segment of users of the internet, on the dangers and negative impacts of information technology use and abuse.

The council, held under the theme “Optimal Use of E-services at the Ministry of Interior”, is part of the awareness councils organized by the Law Respect Culture Bureau,  in cooperation with the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. The council was moderated by media personality Abdul Rahman Al Shamiri, Director General and Editor-in-Chief of Al Watan Newspaper.

In his address at the council, Colonel Dr. Jassem Al Antali, Professor of Criminal Law at the Police College, said that the United Arab Emirates has become a leading model and achieved a quantum leap    in the field of Information Technology.

The council also tackled the positive and negative use of Information Technology resources; calling for intensive and concerted efforts amongst all entities to raise awareness of community members on the safe use of information technology means. Participants in the council emphasized the importance of information technology and its positive impact on catering to the needs of the public in the various government departments and agencies. They also warned against the negative impact of information technology means, such as online fraud and extortion, which may be detrimental to individuals and constitutes a violation of their privacy.

Participants in the council referred to the various laws and regulations enacted by the United Arab Emirates in this regard, in order to protect community members. These laws and regulations include the appropriate penalties to deter whoever dares to use these means as a tool to commit crimes.
